🙋🏻‍♂️I was very hungry the day after my works Xmas 🎄 night out so wanted something that would satisfy. This new Turkish venue on High St had been catching my eye for a while now. Replacing “Juicy Lucy’s” another Hamburger restaurant in an oversaturated market. This venue has a point of difference as Turkish food is very up and coming in the city. Every night I walk past and can see there is a growing number of customers through a much brighter and prettier display than the previous efforts. ✨
Entering i receive a warm welcome and I love the Turkish lights and what they have done with the place. The menu will be a bit unusual for new comers and there is a lot to choose from. Luckily I have Turkish friends and have spent some time in the capital of Ankara so had plenty of authentic Turkish style to know this is the real deal. I opt for the Lamb Kebab which was brought out with an amazing display with salad and mint yoghurt dressing. There was an extra serving of roasted onions in another lovely sauce. The rice was lovely too even though it looks a tad dry in the picture. That was all I had but the service was nice too and it’s a family run business. I will be back with friends to try more options. Craving something new? Bored of the same? You would do well to try this 😋 #glasgow#turkey#authentic#kebabs#food#merchantcity#instafood#instadaily#foodporn#scotland#independant#newbusiness#spiceupyourlife#scottish#turkish#istanbul#ankara#goodfood

Steak, Cattle & Roll
🙋🏻‍♂️ “Glasgow Bred, American Fed” is the Motto for this Steak/Burger chain that has two restaurants in Glasgow, one on Sauchiehall St, and this one in the Merchant Square. I arrive on a quiet Tuesday lunchtime having been to the gym and worked up quite an appetite. I stand to look at the menu for what seems like 5 minutes with nobody approaching me, so I venture inside. The waitress sees me and gets off her laptop to show me to a table. It wasn’t the warmest welcome I’ve ever had but she wasn’t rude either, but maybe a bit lacking in enthusiasm with not much chat on the menu, just basic service “what would you like” etc.

On the menu, they have a bull logo next to signature dishes so I choose one of the top pics “Philli Cheese Steak Ciabatta” and Sweet Potato Fries. Once served I am surprised at the unusual display of fries in a mini shopping basket and the serving is huge for just me, but they are cute nonetheless. The fries had an unusual honey taste which I found a little sickly. The Ciabatta filling was nice with a tender cut of steak meat and nice flavours in the sauce with peppers but the Ciabatta roll wasn’t what I was hoping for. The roll was the fluffy, dry type of bread you might expect from a supermarket. I think this dish would work better with a crispier and sweeter roll like Brioche or crunchy Ciabbta.

Back to the service – there was no offer of a refill for my drink as the staff all appeared to be in a team meeting in a circle applauding each other. I think if they are going to do this in working hours a little 360 awareness wouldn’t go a miss. Took a while to get attention to settle the bill. There are many other tasty looking options on the menu, including just the steak itself and, an impressive cocktail menu so we shall likely return for a revisit. Overall – room for improvement but not terrible.

“There’s been some casualties” informs the quirky waitress when talking through today’s menu. “There is no pork today” Ahhh ok 🤣 just glad nobody’s hurt lol Walked past this Japanese Izakaya 🏮 restaurant on Queen St a few times and been keen to try. Love a bit of Gyoza and Ramen 🍜. Today I have chosen the Chicken Gyoza Dumplings and Chicken Katsu Curry. Maybe not the most adventurous choice but I’m just in the mood for something familiar today. The setting is quite simple inside with mostly wooden stools for seating although there are a few more comfortable padded seats. The place would feel more cosy with some more padded seats. The bar and the open kitchen in the centre of the room and cobbled floor print create a nice street food type feel like you are walking through Japan at night.

Chicken Gyoza is one of my all time fave Japanese starters. I found the coating a little thin and only fried/crunchy on one side. The Katsu was pleasant but the sauce was not as full of flavour as I’ve had elsewhere it was a little bland for a Katsu sauce and the chicken breadcrumbs could have been a little thicker/crunchier. They were both better than average but I have had better in chains like Yo Sushi so I think the quality in these dishes could be higher in order to compete in that market. The service is basic, not overly attentive but not overbearing either. Simple and pleasant.
The price is quite good value which I feel reflects the quality of what you are getting. They have an interesting cocktail menu which I would like to return and try. It does say on the menu that the dishes are smaller more tapas style and it’s a place to drink and catch up with friends which I feel it probably does well. I will return to try some different dishes soon, it made for a nice lunch that doesn’t break the bank. @mikaku_glasgow#japanese#queenst#glasgow#lunch#foodie#mystery#diners#glasgow#review#foodblog#iloveGLA#iloveglasgow

Singl-End Merchant City
🙋🏻‍♂️Writing this as I have just finished my brunch, looking up to a full capacity Singl-End in the Merchant City which has been a major hotspot for its Brunch Menu just as much as it’s afternoon/evening Italian menu. Entering I was really taken aback by the size of the place, tall ceilings an upstairs as well as a back room and pretty much a cake 🍰 shop at the front till. Bellissimo! The waitress sends me to a funky table with glass and Italian 🇮🇹 themed postcards inside which are interesting to look at – a very nice touch! On the walls, we can see it’s a Dog 🐶 Friendly venue and a commitment to Singl-Use products (get it?) 🌱 👍🏻 Taking it all in we have a trendy crowd of ladies who brunch, students and mature couples. The atmosphere is super friendly and the staff are all engaging with each other, laughing, enjoying what they do. It’s a fast-paced environment with a quick turn around and they all appear very switched on and having fun. 😁

Looking at the menu I am hungry but not overly. I see they do Full Breakfast 🙈🤣tempting but trying to be good so opt for the SingleEnd Eggs Florentine (two poached eggs on spinach and red onion, potato and savoy cabbage rosti, hollandaise sauce with a choice of bread so I select the Altamura which is the Italian option) Getting some goodness there but also a delicious choice. The eggs are perfect, I love the bread and balance of flavours. The potato and cabbage rosti was good but a little too salty for my taste. A great dish and don’t feel guilty until I go to leave and find it impossible to walk past the array of homemade baking that would get Mary Berry’s seal of approval. To take home I choose a Spiced Pear 🍐 and Cherry 🍒 Chocolate Loaf. To top it off the waitress said she loved my fragrance. This place has the feel-good factor and a great selection with value deals. Will most definitely be back. @singlend_merchantcity#glasgow#food#reviews#mysterydinersglasgow#instafood#italian#brunch#musttry#homebaking#eggsflorentine#coffee#dogfriendly#scotland#bloggers#iloveGLA#iloveglasgow

Bibimbap
Glasgow was busy for a Sunday, due to the Great Scottish Run with many restaurants having ques out the door. BiBimBap a boutique sized Korean eatery had an urban flavour which made for a more energized vibe. Décor: a funky Korean vibe with multi-coloured umbrellas covering the ceiling. We shared a bottle of “Soju” – Koreas national drink, this is a spirit which can come in different flavours. Following notes from the menu, we replicated the “ritual” for drinking the Soju where the oldest person pours a shot which the other accepts with two hands.

🙋🏻‍♂️Korean Fried Chicken appeared to be the most popular dish as people at other tables seemed to be trying this – Fried Chicken on another level with a crispy, crunchy batter & a Yum Yum sauce. Sweet and Spicy 🌶 – perfect and a world apart from the KFC variety. Main: “Kimchi bokk-eumbab” – a pork fried rice dish topped with egg 🍳 – a great choice with salted & fermented vegetables, tender meat with lovely rice. Cocktails: Seoul Reviver- fresh, citrusy and oriental. My fave cocktail was my second though a Soju Sour – this is a MUST try. Service was polite, efficient but lacked a personal touch. Dishes were served in a slightly rushed manner, placed randomly on the table with the server saying the names of the dishes inaudibly – there were 3 different servers during our meal. We were waiting a while at the end of our meal to pay the bill and the bill was brought twice before we finally got the card machine.

🙍🏻‍♀️Tteok-Bokki – fried rice cake, fried fish cake with a sweet & spicy sauce. Not too impressed with this dish, the texture was odd and limp. The sauce was the best bit – but a bit non-descript. Main: “Bi Bim Bap” – a Hot Stone pot with rice, beef and mixed veg topped with a fried Tasty beef and also a little seaweed – a colourful and flavoursome dish brought together nicely with a nice fried egg. The drink was a nice touch to accompany the meal. We will defo be back! Just a bit more of a personal touch with service would be nice.
