We have been holding this review back for a while as we haven’t had to criticise anywhere since September. However, at Sloans we had a disappointing experience. I have been a couple of times to Glasgow’s oldest Bar & Restaurant just for drinks and always thought it had a cosy Glasgow pub feel, with slightly overpriced drinks.
It had caught my eye that they are famous for their Mac n Cheese and had a separate room for dining. So when on a works lunch, myself & a friend decided on Sloans. We were on an early lunch at 11.45am and had checked on the website that they open at 11.30am. When we arrive in the venue there is two employees chatting next to the dining area. We asked if we could get a seat and the girl abruptly replied that it was 11.30am they opened and we informed her it was now 11.45am. She then apologised and took us to a table and there was already another table sat down? This is really basic stuff 🤯
Confusion aside, the service was very average for the rest of the experience. The disappointment didn't stop there I'm afraid to say. We were tempted by the “Famous Mac n cheese” even though on one occasion the bar maid told me that it was nothing special 😮 (famous for being nothing special? 😂) We opted for the Steak & Ale Pie instead. When presented with our food we could just tell straight away this was 'bung in the oven' quality.
The chips were not homemade and the pie pastry was rock solid. The meat inside the pie was tough in texture and the gravy watery. This meal costs £10. I've had a better Steak Bake at Greggs. It was a mutual feeling from both of us. There was also a lot of bar flies irritating us while eating which wasn't pleasant.
To summarise, Sloans is good for a couple of drinks and that cosy Glasgow pub feel. The food and service on our experience was not up to standard at all. We had higher expectations of this place, unfortunately they weren't met.
